Learn to build resilient relationships. Start by answering those questions about your romantic or business partner
- My partner cares about these values_____.
- My partner needs this _____ to feel safe and comfortable.
- These are my partner’s goals for the future_____.
Now read those answers to your partner. Does he/she agree with you? Did you know the answers?
Those three questions are a great start because knowing what is important to the other person, will help you understand how to connect. Sometimes, you will learn that you have completely different priorities and values and that this just cannot be a strong relationship. It can’t last, because when the times are hard, you will go separate ways. It will be hard, but those are relationships to let go of.
I see it to be very common in both romantic and business relationships. Everything is exciting on the first date! While the relationship evolves, you start learning more about the other person and their priorities. Something is not right but people keep going in a fear of starting over, rejection, failure, or being alone. They end up being unhappy and unable to give enough in order to build happy and strong relationships.
You don’t have to be 100% aligned with everything. For example, I and my husband have the same priorities and values. However, we have a different purpose and career goals. We respect each other’s decisions and help each other to grow, despite having different opinions. He is the only person in this world that can understand me and it makes our relationship resilient.
When working with so many different people, it is impossible for me to align with everyone’s personalities. However, a diverse team helps me to see different perspectives. I can see the full picture of my clients better. The only ground rule for me is that everyone in the team acts with empathy, transparency, and a growth mindset.
